How age is calculated
Your age in completed years is simply this year minus your birth year — minus one more if your birthday has not happened yet this year. The months and days are the remainder, counted with real calendar months (which is why the day count borrows from the previous month when needed). Total days alive is the raw day count between the two dates, which neatly sidesteps leap years: every February 29th you lived through is automatically included. Leap-day babies (born February 29th) get their birthday counted on March 1st in non-leap years here, matching the most common legal convention. The next-birthday countdown also tells you the weekday, which is handy for planning parties. Beyond curiosity, exact-age math matters for school enrollment cutoffs, retirement eligibility, insurance brackets, and medical dosing — anywhere "years old" needs to be precise rather than approximate.
Frequently asked questions
How is my exact age calculated?
Completed years first, then the leftover months and days counted on the real calendar — the same way official documents compute age.
What about leap years?
They are fully included. Total days alive counts every day you have lived, including each February 29th.
When do leap-day babies celebrate in non-leap years?
This calculator uses March 1st, the most common legal convention. Some families prefer February 28th — either way, you are the same age.
Does time of day matter?
No. Age is computed by calendar date, not by the hour you were born, which matches how age is used officially everywhere.
