How to use the color converter

  1. Type a color in any format — HEX like #2563eb, RGB values, or HSL values.
  2. All other formats update live, along with the preview swatch.
  3. Copy the CSS-ready values from the result box into your stylesheet.

HEX vs RGB vs HSL

All three describe the same color — they just speak differently. HEX is the web's shorthand: six hexadecimal digits, two each for red, green, and blue (plus an optional pair for alpha). RGB spells out those same three channels as numbers from 0 to 255, which maps directly to how screens mix light. HSL thinks like a human: hue is the position on the color wheel (0–360°), saturation is how vivid it is, and lightness runs from black through pure color to white. That makes HSL the friendliest format for design work — need a darker button hover state? Keep the hue, drop the lightness by 10. Need a muted variant? Lower the saturation. HEX and RGB are better for copy-pasting into code, since that is what browsers and design tools expect. One caveat: the same HEX can look slightly different across screens, because every display calibrates color a little differently — always sanity-check brand colors on a real device.

Frequently asked questions

What is a HEX color code?

A six-digit hexadecimal representation of red, green, and blue light — e.g. #FF0000 is pure red. The three-digit shorthand (#F00) expands to the same thing.

Should I use HSL or RGB in my CSS?

Both work everywhere modern. Use HSL when you are designing and tweaking (it is intuitive), and RGB or HEX when copying values between tools.

How do I make a color darker or lighter?

In HSL, lower the lightness for darker or raise it for lighter while keeping hue and saturation fixed. That preserves the color's character.

What about transparency (alpha)?

HEX supports it as an 8-digit code (#RRGGBBAA) and RGB as rgba(). This converter focuses on the core three formats; add alpha in your CSS as needed.
