How to calculate CPM and CPC

  1. Choose what to calculate. "Campaign metrics" turns cost, impressions, clicks and conversions into rates.
  2. "Cost from CPM" finds the budget needed for a number of impressions; "Impressions from budget" finds how many impressions a budget buys.
  3. Leave clicks or conversions blank if you do not have them; those metrics are skipped.

Advertising metrics explained

CPM (cost per mille) is the cost of 1,000 impressions: cost ÷ impressions × 1,000. It measures how expensive it is to reach people and is the main pricing unit for display, video and social awareness campaigns. CPC is cost ÷ clicks and CTR is clicks ÷ impressions, which shows how compelling the ad is.

Conversion rate is conversions ÷ clicks and CPA (cost per acquisition) is cost ÷ conversions, the metric that ties ad spend to business results. The funnel connects them: CPA = CPM ÷ (1,000 × CTR × conversion rate). Improving any step, cheaper reach, a better ad, or a better landing page, lowers CPA.

Benchmarks vary enormously by platform, audience and industry, so compare campaigns against your own history. Tag links with our UTM builder so analytics can attribute conversions, and use the ROAS calculator to check whether your CPA is profitable.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate CPM?

Divide total cost by impressions and multiply by 1,000. $1,500 for 250,000 impressions is a $6 CPM.

What is a good CTR?

It varies widely: search ads often see 3–6%, while display and social ads are commonly under 1%. Compare with your own past campaigns.

What is the difference between CPA and CPC?

CPC is the cost of a click; CPA is the cost of a completed action such as a purchase or signup.

What is eCPM?

Effective CPM: total cost (or, for publishers, revenue) per 1,000 impressions regardless of the pricing model used.
