How to use the fraction calculator

  1. Enter the first fraction (add a whole number for a mixed number).
  2. Choose +, −, × or ÷ and enter the second fraction.
  3. Read the simplified answer and the steps. Below, convert any decimal to a fraction.

How fraction arithmetic works

To add or subtract, rewrite both fractions with a common denominator (the least common multiple of the denominators), then add or subtract the numerators: 3/4 + 2/3 = 9/12 + 8/12 = 17/12 = 1 5/12.

To multiply, multiply the numerators and the denominators. To divide, multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction: 3/4 ÷ 2/3 = 3/4 × 3/2 = 9/8. Mixed numbers are converted to improper fractions first.

Answers are simplified by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. The decimal converter finds the exact fraction for terminating decimals and the closest simple fraction for repeating ones like 0.333….
