About HEIC photos
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones and iPads use by default since iOS 11. It stores photos at roughly half the size of JPG with similar quality, but many websites, older Windows versions and some apps cannot open it. JPG works everywhere.
Converting re-encodes the image. At High quality the result is visually identical to the original for normal viewing, though files will be larger than the HEIC. Choose PNG only if you need lossless output; PNG photos are very large. Live Photo motion and depth data are not carried over, only the still image.
To stop your iPhone saving HEIC in the first place, go to Settings > Camera > Formats and choose Most Compatible. iPhones also convert to JPG automatically when you share via some apps or email.

Frequently asked questions
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Conversion happens in your browser with the open-source heic2any library.
Will I lose quality?
At High quality, the difference is not visible in normal use.
Why are the JPGs bigger than the HEIC files?
HEIC compresses about twice as efficiently as JPG, so the same quality needs a larger JPG file.
Is photo location data kept?
No. Converted images do not include EXIF metadata such as GPS location, which is good for privacy.
