Markdown Table Generator

Making Markdown tables by hand is tedious. Edit cells in a grid or paste data straight from Excel, Google Sheets or CSV, set column alignment, and copy a neatly padded table for GitHub, docs or notes.

How to make a Markdown table

  1. Type into the grid (the first row is the header), or paste rows from a spreadsheet or CSV and click Import.
  2. Use the alignment selector above each column to align it left, center or right.
  3. Copy the generated Markdown and paste it into GitHub, GitLab, a README, Notion, Obsidian or any Markdown editor.

Markdown table syntax

A Markdown table is rows of cells separated by pipes (|), with a separator row of dashes under the header. Colons in the separator set alignment: :--- left, :---: center and ---: right. This is the GitHub Flavored Markdown syntax supported by GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Notion, Obsidian, Docusaurus and most static site generators.

Padding cells so the pipes line up does not change how the table renders, but it makes the raw file much easier to read and review in a pull request. Pipe characters inside a cell are escaped automatically as \|.

Markdown tables are best for small, simple data: comparisons, option lists, API parameters. They cannot merge cells or contain multi-line content; for that, use an HTML table.

Frequently asked questions

How do I align a column?

Choose left, center or right above the column. The separator row gets the matching colons.

Can I paste from Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. Copy the cells, paste them into the import box and click Import. Tab-separated and comma-separated data both work.

How do I put a pipe character in a cell?

It is escaped automatically as \| in the output.

Can a cell contain a line break?

Not in standard Markdown tables. Some renderers accept
inside a cell.
