Paver & Brick Calculator
Plan a patio, walkway or brick wall. Get the number of pavers or bricks with waste, plus the gravel base, bedding sand, polymeric sand or mortar you need to finish the job.
Pavers needed
How to calculate pavers
- Choose a patio or a wall and enter the length and the width (or wall height) in feet.
- Pick the paver or brick size, or enter a custom size in inches.
- For a patio, set the gravel base and sand depths; 4–6 inches of base suits patios and walkways, 8 inches or more for driveways.
Planning materials for a paver patio
Divide the area by the face area of one paver and add 5–10% for cuts and breakage, more for curves and diagonal patterns. A 16 × 12 ft patio of 4 × 8 in pavers needs about 864 pavers before waste.
Under the pavers goes a compacted base of crushed gravel (often called 3/4-inch minus or road base) and a 1-inch screeded layer of coarse concrete sand. Gravel weighs roughly 1.4 tons per cubic yard and sand about 1.35. Polymeric sand swept into the joints locks pavers together; a 50 lb bag typically covers 30–75 sq ft depending on joint width and paver size.
For brick walls, a modular brick with a 3/8-inch mortar joint takes about 6.9 bricks per square foot of wall face for a single wythe. One 80 lb bag of premixed mortar lays roughly 35 bricks. Structural and retaining walls may need engineering and permits; check local codes.

Frequently asked questions
How many pavers are in a square foot?
About 4.5 for 4 × 8 in pavers, 4 for 6 × 6 in, 2.7 for 6 × 9 in, and 1 for 12 × 12 in.
How deep should the gravel base be?
4–6 inches for patios and walkways on well-drained soil; 8–12 inches for driveways or clay soil.
How much sand goes under pavers?
A 1-inch screeded bedding layer; do not use more, or pavers can settle unevenly.
How many bricks per square foot of wall?
About 6.9 modular bricks per square foot with 3/8-inch mortar joints.
