How to use the team generator
- Paste or type one name per line — players, students, coworkers, anyone.
- Set how many teams you want (2 to 20).
- Click Generate teams. Names are shuffled with cryptographic randomness, then dealt round-robin so squads stay balanced.
- Don't like the result? Click again for a fresh shuffle.
Fair teams, zero arguments
The fastest way to ruin a pickup game, a classroom activity, or an office icebreaker is spending ten minutes negotiating teams while everyone stands around. Random assignment ends the debate instantly — and it is genuinely fairer than captains picking, which always leaves the same people chosen last. This generator shuffles with your browser's cryptographic random number generator (the same quality of randomness used for security purposes), then deals names round-robin so team sizes differ by at most one person even with awkward numbers like 11 players into 3 teams. It works for any grouping job: sports drafts, study groups, hackathon teams, Secret Santa pools, or splitting a big dinner bill into cars. Paste from a spreadsheet column directly — one name per line is the only rule.
Frequently asked questions
How random are the teams really?
Very. Names are shuffled with crypto.getRandomValues, your browser's cryptographic random source, before being dealt out — far fairer than any human could shuffle.
Will the teams be the same size?
As close as possible. Names are dealt round-robin, so teams differ by at most one person. With 11 names and 3 teams you get 4, 4, and 3.
What if I need more teams than names?
The tool will tell you to add more names or reduce the team count — every team needs at least one member.
Can I re-shuffle if I don't like the result?
Absolutely — just click Generate teams again for a completely fresh random split.
