How to find sunrise and sunset times

  1. Pick a city, or enter latitude and longitude (positive for north and east, negative for south and west). "Use my location" fills them in from your device.
  2. Choose the date and the time zone to display.
  3. Read sunrise, sunset, twilight, golden hour and day length.

About the calculations

Times are calculated in your browser with the NOAA solar position equations, which are typically accurate to within a minute for most of the populated world. Sunrise and sunset are defined as the moment the top edge of the sun touches the horizon, allowing for atmospheric refraction, which is why day length is a little over 12 hours at the equinox.

Civil twilight runs from when the sun is 6° below the horizon until sunrise (and after sunset back to 6° below). There is usually enough light to work outdoors without artificial lighting. Photographers' golden hour is shown here as the time the sun is between 6° above and 6° below the horizon, giving the warm, soft light prized for portraits and landscapes.

Local terrain is not taken into account: mountains, buildings or a sea horizon can make the sun appear or disappear a few minutes earlier or later than calculated. Near the poles, there may be no sunrise or sunset at all on some dates, which the calculator will tell you.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the day longer than 12 hours on the equinox?

Sunrise and sunset use the top edge of the sun and include atmospheric refraction, which together add several minutes of daylight.

What is golden hour?

The period just after sunrise and before sunset when the sun is low and light is warm and soft. Its length depends on your latitude and the season.

Does "Use my location" send my location anywhere?

No. Your device provides the coordinates to this page and the calculation happens locally.

How accurate are the times?

Usually within a minute or two, though hills, buildings and weather affect what you actually see.
