How to convert text to binary

  1. Type or paste text.
  2. Choose binary, hex, octal or decimal and how bytes should be separated.
  3. Switch direction to decode codes back to text.

How text becomes binary

Computers store text as numbers. UTF-8, the encoding used by almost every website, represents each character as one to four bytes: English letters take one byte (the same as ASCII), accented letters usually two, and emoji four. Each byte is shown as 8 binary digits, two hex digits, three octal digits or a decimal number from 0 to 255.

For example, "H" is decimal 72, hex 48, binary 01001000. The waving-hand emoji is four bytes: F0 9F 91 8B.

When decoding, the tool accepts bytes separated by spaces or commas, or a continuous string of binary or hex digits. Invalid input is flagged rather than silently ignored.

Frequently asked questions

What is "Hello" in binary?

01001000 01100101 01101100 01101100 01101111.

Why does an emoji produce four bytes?

UTF-8 uses up to four bytes for characters outside the basic Latin range, including all emoji.

Is this the same as ASCII?

For English letters, numbers and punctuation, yes; UTF-8 extends ASCII to every language and emoji.

Can I decode binary without spaces?

Yes. Continuous binary is split into 8-bit bytes automatically.
