Typing tips
WPM — words per minute — is calculated the standard way: every five characters counts as one "word," so it measures raw speed independent of word length. Accuracy is the percentage of characters typed correctly. Most casual typists land between 35 and 45 WPM; 60+ is solidly fast, and professional transcriptionists exceed 90. The fastest gains come from proper touch typing: all ten fingers, eyes on the screen, not the keyboard. Slow down deliberately to fix accuracy first — speed built on errors is useless, and accuracy improvements naturally unlock speed later. Take the test a few times; your first attempt is usually your worst as you warm up.
Frequently asked questions
How is WPM calculated?
All correctly typed characters are divided by five (the standard "word" length), then divided by minutes elapsed.
Why did the timer start before I was ready?
The clock starts on your first keystroke by design, so there is no penalty for reading the passage first.
Does backspacing hurt my score?
Backspace itself is not penalized, but deleted characters do not count as correct — only final correct characters score.
What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 WPM is average, 60–80 is fast, and 90+ is professional territory.
