How to count word frequency

  1. Paste your text into the box. Results update as you type.
  2. Choose single words or two- and three-word phrases, and decide whether to ignore common words.
  3. Read the ranked table or download it as a CSV for a spreadsheet.

What word frequency tells you

Every writer has crutch words: "really", "just", "actually", "very". A frequency list exposes them instantly. For editing, look at the top 20 non-common words and ask whether each repetition is intentional. For SEO, check that your main topic terms appear naturally and that you are not repeating one keyword so often it reads as stuffing.

Two- and three-word phrases are often more revealing than single words. They show the expressions you repeat ("in order to", "at the end of the day") and the topics a document is really about. Researchers use the same technique on interview transcripts and survey comments to find recurring themes.

Lexical diversity is the number of unique words divided by the total. Longer texts naturally score lower, so compare it between texts of similar length. The common-word filter uses a standard English stopword list, and everything is counted in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a word?

Sequences of letters, numbers, apostrophes and hyphens. "Don't" and "well-known" each count as one word. Matching ignores capitalization.

What are stopwords?

Very common words such as the, and, of and to that carry little meaning. Ignoring them helps the meaningful words stand out.

Can I use this for SEO keyword density?

Yes. The percentage column shows how often each word or phrase appears relative to the total.

Is my text stored?

No. Everything is processed locally in your browser.
