How to use this template
Start by setting your total gift budget in the yellow cell at the top — the single most important number in holiday spending. Then list every recipient and assign each a budget. Writing the gift idea in the same row is the real trick: it turns vague intentions into a shopping list and stops the aimless, expensive browsing.
As you buy, enter what you spent. The Remaining column updates per person, and if you go over someone's budget the status flips to OVER in red. That flag is not a scolding — it is information. Shift ten dollars from a recipient you have not shopped for yet, or accept the overage consciously. Either way, you decide instead of discovering it in January.
The totals row is your season dashboard: budget versus spent across all twenty-five slots, plus a recipient count. Check it before every shopping trip. A calm, planned December is the whole point — the spreadsheet just holds the plan where you can see it.
Watch for the two classic budget-killers: stocking stuffers and just-one-more-thing trips. Small unplanned purchases add up faster than the big gifts because they bypass the list entirely. A simple rule helps — if it is not on the tracker, it waits 24 hours. Most impulse gifts lose their urgency overnight, and the ones that survive the wait are usually the good ones.
Frequently asked questions
Is this gift budget tracker really free?
Yes. Download it, use it forever, no account or payment. It is supported the same way as our free tools — advertising on the site.
When should I start using it?
As early as you like — many people start the list in October. The earlier the per-person budgets are set, the more the tracker can save you.
Can I track more than 25 recipients?
Yes. Insert rows inside the table and copy the formulas down from the row above — remaining, status, and the red OVER flags all extend with the row.
Does it work in Google Sheets?
Yes. Upload the .xlsx to Google Drive and open with Google Sheets; the formulas and conditional formatting carry over. It also works in LibreOffice.
