How to use this template
Start with the position overview: two or three sentences on what the role does, who they will work with, and why it matters. This is the part candidates read first, so make it specific — vague postings attract vague applicants.
List responsibilities as outcomes, not just tasks. "Own the monthly close process for three entities" tells a candidate far more than "handle accounting duties." Do the same for qualifications: separate must-haves from nice-to-haves so strong candidates do not self-reject.
Always include a salary range and a clear apply instruction. Postings with pay ranges get significantly more applicants, and a missing "how to apply" is the most common reason good candidates bounce.
Frequently asked questions
Is this job description template really free?
Yes. Download it and use it for as many postings as you like, no account or payment.
Will it work in Google Docs?
Yes. Upload the .docx to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs; the formatting carries over.
Should I post the salary range?
We strongly recommend it. Listings with pay ranges attract more — and better-matched — applicants, and several states now require it.
Can I customize the sections?
Absolutely. Add, remove, or rename sections to fit the role. The template is a starting point, not a straitjacket.
