How seeding and byes work
In a seeded single-elimination bracket, the top seed plays the lowest seed, the second plays the second-lowest, and so on, arranged so that the top two seeds can only meet in the final. This rewards strong regular-season or qualifying performance and avoids early matchups between favorites.
Brackets work most cleanly with 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64 entrants. For other numbers, some top seeds receive a bye and advance straight to round two. With 6 teams, for example, seeds 1 and 2 get byes into the semifinals.
A random draw is fairer when there is no ranking. For double elimination or round-robin formats, run this bracket for the knockout stage after a group stage.
