What converts and what does not

HTML to Markdown handles headings, paragraphs, bold and italic, links, images, ordered and unordered lists (including nested lists), blockquotes, inline code and code blocks, horizontal rules and tables (as GitHub-flavored Markdown). Scripts, styles and comments are removed, and unsupported tags are reduced to their text.

Markdown to HTML produces clean, unstyled HTML for headings, emphasis, links, images, lists, blockquotes, code and tables. The HTML is sanitized: raw script tags and inline event handlers in the Markdown are not passed through.

Markdown cannot represent everything HTML can (colors, layout, merged table cells), so styling is lost in that direction. For a live rendered preview, use our Markdown previewer.

Frequently asked questions

Is the conversion done locally?

Yes. Nothing is uploaded.

Does it support tables?

Yes, as GitHub-flavored Markdown tables in both directions.

What happens to inline styles?

They are dropped when converting to Markdown, since Markdown has no styling syntax.

Can I paste a whole web page?

Yes. Scripts, styles and navigation markup are removed, but you may want to trim headers and footers.
