    How to do long division

    1. Write the dividend (the number being divided) under the division bracket and the divisor to its left.
    2. Working left to right, see how many times the divisor goes into the first digits. Write that above, multiply, subtract, then bring down the next digit.
    3. Repeat until there are no digits left. What is left over is the remainder, or keep going with zeros after a decimal point for a decimal answer.

    Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down

Long division repeats four steps. Divide: how many times does the divisor fit into the current number? Multiply: multiply the divisor by that digit. Subtract: take the product away to find what is left. Bring down: move the next digit down beside it. A popular memory trick is “Does McDonald’s Sell Burgers?” for Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down.

For example, 7425 ÷ 15: 15 does not go into 7, so start with 74. 15 goes into 74 four times (60), leaving 14. Bring down the 2 to make 142; 15 goes in nine times (135), leaving 7. Bring down the 5 to make 75; 15 goes in exactly five times. The answer is 495.

    Remainders, fractions and decimals

When the division does not come out even, the amount left over is the remainder: 47 ÷ 5 = 9 R 2. As a mixed number the remainder goes over the divisor: 9 2⁄5. For a decimal, put a decimal point after the dividend, add zeros, and keep dividing: 47 ÷ 5 = 9.4.

Some divisions never end. 1000 ÷ 7 = 142.857142857…, where “857142” repeats forever. The calculator spots the moment a remainder comes back, because from then on the digits must repeat, and marks the repeating part with a bar.

    Dividing by a decimal

To divide by a decimal, move the decimal point in both numbers the same number of places until the divisor is a whole number. 84.6 ÷ 0.3 becomes 846 ÷ 3 = 282. The answer does not change, because both numbers were multiplied by 10.

    Frequently asked questions

What do dividend, divisor and quotient mean?

The dividend is the number being divided, the divisor is the number you divide by, and the quotient is the answer. In 20 ÷ 4 = 5, 20 is the dividend, 4 the divisor and 5 the quotient.

How do I check a long division answer?

Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder. You should get back the dividend: 9 × 5 + 2 = 47.

Can it divide very large numbers?

Yes. It uses exact whole-number arithmetic, so even numbers with dozens of digits are divided without rounding errors.

    What about negative numbers?

The division is worked out with the numbers as positive, and the sign rule is applied to the answer: a negative divided by a positive is negative.
