How to convert military time

  1. Type a time in either format: 0930, 17:45, 5:45 pm or 12 am.
  2. Read the military and standard versions, plus how the military time is spoken.
  3. Use the chart for quick reference.

Reading 24-hour time

Military time counts hours from 00 to 23, so no AM or PM is needed. For hours from 1 p.m. on, add 12: 3:00 p.m. is 1500. To go back, subtract 12 from hours 13 and above: 2130 is 9:30 p.m.

Midnight is 0000 and noon is 1200. 12:30 a.m. is 0030. Times are usually written without a colon and spoken as "fifteen hundred" for 1500 or "zero nine thirty" for 0930.

The 24-hour clock is standard in the military, aviation, hospitals, emergency services and most countries outside North America, because it removes AM/PM confusion.
