How to use the pace calculator
- Choose what to calculate: pace, finish time, or distance.
- Pick a race distance or enter a custom distance in miles or kilometers, and fill in the other known value.
- Read your pace in both units, your speed, and the split table for even pacing.
Pacing your race
Even pacing is the most efficient way to race. Starting too fast burns through stored energy and leads to a slow, painful finish; most personal bests come from even or slightly negative splits, where the second half is a little faster than the first. The split table shows exactly where you should be at each mile or kilometer marker.
Training paces are often set relative to race pace. Easy runs are typically 60–90 seconds per mile slower than marathon pace, tempo runs are around your 10-mile to half-marathon pace, and intervals are at 5K pace or faster. Pair this with the heart rate zone calculator to make sure easy days are truly easy.
Race distances use their official lengths: 5 km (3.107 miles), 10 km (6.214 miles), the half marathon at 21.0975 km (13.11 miles) and the marathon at 42.195 km (26.22 miles). On race day, GPS watches usually read a little long because runners do not run the exact shortest line, so aim to be slightly ahead of your splits.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good 5K time?
It depends on age and experience. Many recreational runners finish a 5K in 25–35 minutes; under 20 minutes is fast for most age groups.
What pace is a 2-hour half marathon?
About 9:09 per mile (5:41 per km).
What pace is a 4-hour marathon?
About 9:09 per mile (5:41 per km), the same as a 2-hour half.
How do I convert pace per mile to per km?
Divide the per-mile pace by 1.609. The calculator shows both automatically.
