How to convert steps to miles

  1. Choose the direction and enter steps or a distance.
  2. Enter your height; the stride is estimated from it, or enter a measured stride for best accuracy.
  3. Pick your activity and enter your weight for a calorie estimate.

How many steps are in a mile?

Walking stride length averages about 0.413 times height for women and 0.415 times height for men. For someone 5 feet 7 inches tall that is about 28 inches, or roughly 2,270 steps per mile. Taller people and faster walkers take fewer, longer steps; running strides are much longer, so this tool lengthens the stride when you choose running.

To measure your own stride, walk a known distance such as 20 steps on a track or measured path, then divide the distance by the steps. Fitness trackers let you enter this number to improve their distance estimates.

Calories are estimated with the ACSM walking and running equations from your weight and pace. Actual burn depends on terrain, fitness and body composition. This calculator gives general estimates for information only and is not medical advice.
