How to test your webcam

  1. Click Start camera and allow camera access when your browser asks.
  2. Check the live picture, resolution and frame rate. Choose another camera or resolution from the menus.
  3. Take a snapshot to check sharpness and color; snapshots stay on your device until you download them.

Troubleshooting a webcam that will not work

If you see a permission error, click the camera icon in the address bar and allow access, then reload. On a Mac, also check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and make sure your browser is allowed; on Windows, check Settings → Privacy → Camera.

If the camera is "in use", close other apps that might be using it, such as video call apps, and try again. Some laptops have a physical shutter or a function key that turns the camera off. External webcams may need a different USB port.

The frame rate shown is measured live and drops in dim light, because cameras lengthen exposure to brighten the picture. Good front lighting is the easiest way to improve video quality. The requested resolution is a request; the browser picks the closest one your camera supports.

Frequently asked questions

Is this webcam test private?

Yes. The video stays in your browser and is never uploaded or recorded. Snapshots are only saved if you download them.

Why is my webcam black?

Another app may be using it, a privacy shutter may be closed, or your operating system may be blocking the browser.

Why is my frame rate low?

Low light, USB bandwidth or a busy computer can reduce frame rate. Add light and close other apps.

Does it work on phones?

Yes, in modern mobile browsers. Use the camera menu to switch between front and back cameras.
