How to preview a YouTube thumbnail
- Drop your thumbnail image into the box. Add up to three more versions to compare them side by side.
- Type the video title and channel name exactly as they will appear. The preview updates as you type.
- Switch between Home feed, Search, Up next and Mobile, try dark mode, and turn on the squint test to see whether the thumbnail still reads when it is small and blurry.
Why preview at real size?
You design a thumbnail full screen, but most viewers see it about the size of a large postage stamp, and in the “Up next” sidebar it is only 168 pixels wide. Small text, low contrast and busy backgrounds that look fine in your editor can turn to mush at that size. Seeing it next to other videos also shows whether it stands out or blends in.
Thumbnail checklist
- Size: 1280 × 720 pixels (16:9), at least 640 pixels wide, under 2 MB, as JPG, PNG or GIF.
- Text: three to five words at most, large and bold, kept away from the bottom-right corner where the duration badge covers it.
- Contrast: the grayscale view shows whether your subject and text stand out without relying on color.
- Faces: a clear, expressive face, large in the frame, is easy to read even at small sizes.
- Title and thumbnail together: they should complement each other, not repeat the same words.
This preview uses a generic layout modelled on common video feeds, so exact spacing and fonts on the real site may differ slightly and change over time. Titles longer than about 60 characters may be cut off in some places.

Frequently asked questions
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
1280 × 720 pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio is recommended. The file should be under 2 MB and in JPG, PNG or GIF format.
Can I compare different thumbnail designs?
Yes. Add up to four images; they appear next to each other in the feed so you can judge which grabs attention best.
What is the squint test?
It blurs the preview, simulating a quick glance or a small screen. If you can still tell what the thumbnail shows and read the main words, it will work in a busy feed.
Is this connected to YouTube?
No. It is an independent preview tool that runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is posted or uploaded.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens inside your browser tab, so your files never leave your device and nothing is stored on a server.
