How to find the BPM of a song

  1. Drop one or more audio files into the box, or click “Choose audio files”. Video files work too.
  2. Wait a moment while each song is analyzed. The tempo appears next to the file name, with half and double values.
  3. Click “Play with click” to hear the song with a click on every beat. If the clicks run twice as fast or slow as the music, press ½ or ×2.

How the tempo is detected

The finder listens to up to 90 seconds from the middle of the track, where the beat is usually steadiest. It measures how quickly the sound changes in each moment (drums, plucks and chord changes make sharp jumps), then looks for the time gap at which that pattern repeats best. That gap becomes the tempo, refined to a tenth of a BPM.

Music has a beat at several levels at once, so a song at 140 BPM also has a strong pulse at 70 and 280. The finder favours tempos between about 70 and 180 BPM, which suits most pop, rock, hip hop and dance music. If your song is a slow ballad or fast drum and bass, the half or double value may be the one you want. That is what the ½ and ×2 buttons are for.

Typical tempos by genre

GenreTypical BPM
Hip hop80–100
Reggaeton88–100
Pop100–130
House120–130
Techno125–145
Dubstep140 (felt as 70)
Drum and bass160–180

Songs recorded with a live drummer drift a little, and some songs change tempo partway through. In those cases the result is the average tempo of the section that was analyzed.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the BPM?

For music with a steady beat it is usually within 1 BPM, and the click track lets you hear whether it lines up. Songs with no drums, rubato playing or tempo changes are harder and may show low confidence.

Why does it say 70 when the song feels like 140?

Both are correct readings of the same beat at different levels. Use the ×2 button to switch. DJs usually count the faster pulse; musicians often count the slower one.

Can I check several songs at once?

Yes. Drop as many files as you like; each gets its own result, and “Copy results” copies the whole list.

Does it find the musical key?

No, this tool measures tempo only.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens inside your browser tab, so your files never leave your device and nothing is stored on a server.
