How to create a citation
- Choose the citation style your teacher or journal requires and the type of source.
- Enter authors and the publication details; leave fields blank if they do not apply.
- Copy the citation (italics are kept when pasting into Word or Google Docs), or add it to your list and copy the whole list in alphabetical order.
Citation tips
APA 7 lists authors as last name and initials, puts the year right after the authors, and uses sentence case for article and book titles: capitalize only the first word, the first word after a colon and proper nouns. MLA 9 uses full names and title case, with the container (website, journal) in italics.
Use a DOI rather than a URL for journal articles when one exists, written as https://doi.org/… in APA. If a web page has no author, the title moves to the front in APA and MLA. If there is no date, APA uses (n.d.).
Always double-check the result against your style guide or your instructor's instructions, because some sources need extra elements. Your saved list stays in this browser only.
