How to remove audio from a video

  1. Drop a video onto the box or click "Choose video". MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV are supported.
  2. Click "Remove sound". Because nothing is re-encoded, this usually takes a second or two.
  3. Preview the silent video, then click "Download video".

Lossless: the picture is not touched

Most online tools decode and re-encode the whole video just to drop the sound, which is slow and costs quality. This tool works at the file level instead: it copies the video stream into a new file exactly as it was stored, and leaves the audio stream out. The result has the same resolution, frame rate and quality as your original, and the same format: an MP4 stays an MP4 and a WebM stays a WebM. MOV files are saved as MOV.

Removing the audio is useful before posting a clip with background music you do not have rights to, before adding your own soundtrack in an editor, for screen recordings that picked up keyboard noise, or for privacy when a video captured nearby conversations. The file also gets a little smaller.

To replace the sound rather than remove it, mute the video here and add the new audio in your video editor.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is processed by your own browser using its built-in video encoder. Nothing is sent to a server, so private videos stay private.

Does removing the sound reduce quality?

No. The video stream is copied byte for byte, so the picture is identical to the original.

Why is it so fast?

Nothing is re-encoded. The tool only rewrites the file without the audio track, which takes a second or two even for long videos.

Will the file get smaller?

A little: audio is usually 5 to 10 percent of a video’s size. Use the Video Compressor to shrink it further.

Which browsers does it work in?

Recent Chrome, Edge and Opera on desktop and Android, Safari 26 on Mac and iPhone, and Firefox 130 or newer on desktop. These browsers include the WebCodecs video encoder the tool uses.
