How to run a spelling test

  1. Paste the week's word list — one word per line — and click Load words.
  2. In practice mode, click Say the word: the device reads it aloud while it stays hidden. Write it, then Reveal to check.
  3. On test day, print the sheet: numbered blank lines, one per word, ready to hand out.

Why read-aloud practice works

Spelling tests measure listening as much as memory: the student hears a sound pattern, holds it, and converts it to letters. Reading words on a screen skips the first two steps entirely, which is why a list a child "knows" on Monday can still wobble on Friday's test. Hearing each word without seeing it — then checking immediately — rehearses the exact skill being graded, and the instant reveal turns every miss into a quick correction instead of a red mark a week later.

Keep lists to 10–15 words, practice in short daily rounds rather than one long session, and shuffle the order by reloading the list in a different sequence so position never becomes a crutch.

Frequently asked questions

Which voice reads the words?

Your device's built-in text-to-speech voice (the same one your browser uses for read-aloud). Quality varies by device — most phones and Chromebooks have a clear default voice installed.

What if speech does not work in my browser?

Check that the tab is not muted and try Chrome, Edge, or Safari, which ship with voices. The printable test sheet works everywhere regardless.

How many words can a test have?

As many as you paste. For most students 10–15 words per test keeps practice focused; the printed sheet numbers every word you enter.

Can students practice without printing anything?

Yes — practice mode is the whole point. The print sheet is for formal tests or homework; day-to-day drilling needs only the Say / Reveal loop.
