How to use the test grader

  1. Enter the number of questions or total points on the test.
  2. Find the number a student missed in the chart to read their percentage and letter grade.
  3. Use half points for partial credit, and print the chart to keep beside your grading pile.

How the grading chart works

Each score is (total − number wrong) ÷ total × 100. On a 25-question quiz, every question is worth 4%, so 3 wrong is 88%. The chart lists every possible number wrong so you can grade a stack of papers without doing the math each time.

Letter grades use a common scale: 93+ A, 90–92 A−, 87–89 B+, 83–86 B, 80–82 B−, and so on down to below 60 for F. Many schools use their own cut-offs, so switch to plain letters or no letters if the plus/minus scale does not match yours.

For weighted questions, enter total points instead of questions and use half points if you give partial credit. To combine test scores into a course grade, use our weighted grade calculator.
