How to convert time to decimal hours
- Enter the hours and minutes worked, for example 7 hours 45 minutes. You can also paste a time like 7:45 into the Hours box.
- Read the decimal hours: 7:45 is 7.75 hours. Add an hourly rate to see the pay for that time.
- To go the other way, type decimal hours such as 8.6 in the second calculator to get 8 hours 36 minutes.
The formula
Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60 (+ seconds ÷ 3600). So 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours, and 8 hours 20 minutes is 8 + 20 ÷ 60 = 8.33 hours. To convert back, keep the whole number as hours and multiply the decimal part by 60: 8.6 hours is 8 hours and 0.6 × 60 = 36 minutes.
Payroll systems, timesheet apps and invoices use decimal hours because they can be multiplied by an hourly rate directly. A common mistake is reading 7:30 as 7.30 hours; it is really 7.5 hours, and using 7.30 would underpay by 12 minutes. Most payroll rounds to two decimal places, which is accurate to within about 18 seconds.
