Keeping GIFs small
GIF is an old format that stores every frame with up to 256 colors, so files grow quickly. Size is roughly width × height × frames: a 3-second, 480-pixel-wide clip at 10 fps is about 30 frames and often 1–4 MB.
For smaller files, shorten the clip, reduce the width, lower the frame rate or use fewer colors. Clips with little motion and flat colors compress best; grainy footage and gradients compress poorly.
Many sites (including most messaging apps) now accept short MP4 videos, which look better and are much smaller than GIFs. Use our video trimmer if a silent MP4 clip works for you.

How long can a GIF be?
Up to 15 seconds here; shorter clips make much smaller files.
Why is my GIF so large?
GIFs store every frame; reduce the width, length, frame rate or colors.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The GIF is made in your browser.
Can I add text to the GIF?
Not here yet; you can add text to a still image with our add text to image tool.
