How to add page numbers to a PDF

  1. Drop your PDF onto the box or click "Choose PDF".
  2. Choose the position and format. "Page 1 of 10" is the most common for reports; plain numbers suit books and manuals.
  3. Optionally skip the cover page or start at a different number, then click "Add page numbers" to download the numbered file.

Page numbering tips

Page numbers make long documents usable: reviewers can point to "page 14", printed copies can be put back in order, and legal and academic submissions often require them. Bottom center is the traditional choice; bottom right works well for documents that will be printed single-sided and stapled.

If your document has a cover page, tick "Don't number the first page". The numbering then begins on page 2, starting from whatever number you choose, so you can make the first content page "1" by leaving the start number at 1. The "of N" total counts only the numbered pages.

Numbers are added as real text in Helvetica, drawn on top of each page without changing the existing content. Everything runs in your browser with pdf-lib, so confidential documents stay on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The file is read and processed by JavaScript in your browser and saved straight back to your device. Nothing is sent to a server.

Will the numbers cover my content?

They are placed within the page margin. If your document has very small margins, increase the distance from the edge or reduce the font size.

Can I start at a number other than 1?

Yes. Set "Start numbering at" to any number, which is useful when a PDF is one chapter of a longer document.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

Yes. The numbers are drawn on top of scanned page images too.
