How to watermark a PDF
- Drop your PDF onto the box or click "Choose PDF".
- Type the watermark text and choose a layout: a large diagonal stamp, a centered line, a tiled pattern, or a small footer line.
- Adjust size, color and opacity. 20–30% opacity marks the page clearly while keeping the content readable. Click "Add watermark" to download.
When to watermark a document
A watermark tells every reader how a document should be treated: DRAFT for versions still under review, CONFIDENTIAL or INTERNAL for sensitive material, SAMPLE or PREVIEW for work shared before payment, and COPY for duplicates of signed originals. Adding the recipient's name (for example "Prepared for Acme Co.") discourages forwarding.
The tiled layout is the hardest to remove or crop out, which makes it a good choice for previews of paid work such as designs, reports and photos. The footer layout is subtle enough for documents that will be printed and filed.
The watermark is drawn as semi-transparent text on top of each page using pdf-lib, entirely in your browser. Keep in mind that anyone with a PDF editor can still remove visible watermarks; they deter casual misuse rather than provide security.

Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The file is read and processed by JavaScript in your browser and saved straight back to your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
Can a watermark be removed?
A determined person with PDF editing software can remove or cover it. Tiled watermarks are harder to remove cleanly than a single stamp.
Can I use an image or logo as a watermark?
This tool adds text watermarks. Your company name in capitals works well as a text logo.
Will the text underneath stay searchable?
Yes. The watermark is added on top; the original text remains selectable and searchable.
